COLLECTION SYSTEM

To make collection more efficient and facilitate subsequent treatment, recycling, and disposal phases, waste batteries and accumulators have been divided into two main categories: portable batteries and accumulators, and industrial and starter accumulators.

Portable Batteries and Accumulators

For each of these two main categories, the collection service is carried out with specific organizational and logistical characteristics.

The CDCNPA assigns the responsibility for collection at registered points to the Consortium Members’ Collection Systems on a territorial basis (normally the reference area is the province), proportionally to the market share represented in the Portable Batteries and Accumulators category.

Industrial and Vehicle Accumulators

Industrial accumulators are mainly divided into two categories:

  • traction batteries, which provide energy for electric motor vehicles, such as forklifts, golf carts, cleaning machines, and electric vehicles in general;
  • stationary batteries, which include all those industrial accumulators that power uninterruptible power supplies, such as positioning lights, electrical cabinets on power transmission networks, electronic signage panels (present along highways), or those used to store so-called “green energy”, to release it during hours when accumulation would not be possible (as in the case of solar panels, which use energy stored during the day during nighttime hours).

Regardless of their category, industrial accumulators can be lead-acid (which is certainly the most common type of battery), lithium, nickel-cadmium, and salt-based.
